Kidpower India, for the last 5 years is working in the slums of Visakhapatnam to eradicate child labour through bridge schools. At present, Kidpower India is working in 2 slums: Ekalavya Colony and Chittibabu Colony. About 430 families live in these slums. Most of the families are rag pickets, hair collection, selling brooms, begging and few go to daily wage labour. They are in extreme poverty and have no savings. It is to be noted most of the families are of large size with each family having 3-4 children on an average. The developments in the last few weeks have created a havoc in their lives. Because of the Coronavirus pandemic the city is in lockdown for the next few weeks. There is a lot of uncertainty of what is going to happen after the lockdown. This means they are unable to work or earn for their living. They can handle few days. Beyond that they are in position to afford food and other basic items. This can lead to deprivation, hunger and deep poverty. It can also lead to children dropping out of school and forced to work to support the family. Hence it is very important to support the family with rations and other needs to overcome this pandemic.
